Lafayette Short Term Rentals to be Decided by City Council

On July 25th, 2023, the Lafayette City Council will be considering ordinances aimed at addressing the proliferation of Short-Term Rentals (“STR’s”) like AirBNB, VRBO, etc. There are two proposed ordinances from two city council members. Councilman Andy Naquin’s (R 7/10) proposal (Agenda Item #9) would allow them to operate in town but not in single family residential zones. His ordinance would protect neighborhoods like yours and mine from STR’s operating in them, but allow them to operate in commercial and other appropriate zones and areas. Councilman Pat Lewis’ (D 3/10) proposal would permit STR’s to operate everywhere in town, whether in neighborhoods or on Johnston St.

Both Federal and State Courts have determined that STR’s are commercial activity. They are considered lodging for use by transient occupants, akin to a motel, and are legally distinct from regular rental property where tenants live as residents. To permit these commercial mini-motels to operate in residential zones, would be the same as ending residential zoning altogether in Lafayette.

We who want to protect neighborhoods for residential living in Lafayette highly support Mr. Naquin’s proposal. We urge you to share this with those who want single family zoning to remain intact in this town and to call, write, email the City Council Office, your council member, and the mayor, or even show up to the council meeting this Tuesday, July 25, at 5:30 p.m. to speak your mind on the matter and show support for Mr. Naquin’s proposal. Urge our city leaders to vote YES for Agenda Item # 9! Every phone call, email, and speaker in support of Mr. Naquin’s proposal counts! PLEASE SHARE THIS EMAIL WITH ANYONE YOU KNOW WHO SHARES IN OUR SENTIMENTS!
