FINAL LCG Council Scorecard 2016-2019

by | Mar 17, 2019

Updated: 4 January 2020

If Lafayette is moving the wrong direction, it is the elected officials who have set that direction and not the charter. As we’ve witnessed, many council members have continued to pursue whatever direction they’d like regardless of input from the public they purport to serve. This reveals that perhaps the form of government is less important than the individuals who run that government.

In order to discover where those representatives stand on the issues, we’ve identified 93 (and growing) controversial votes made by this council since being seated in January of 2016. “Controversial  votes” are not based on any ideology. Rather, they are any and all non-unanimous votes. Below is the result of that analysis, followed by the actual votes.

Kevin Naquin

Democrat* - District 1

  • Tax Roll-Forward 100% 100%
  • New Taxes 100% 100%
  • Votes with Democrats 79% 79%
  • Votes with Republicans 22% 22%

*Kevin changed parties from Democratic to Republican to run for re-election. However, of all LCG Councilmen, he votes with Republicans the least.

“Tax Roll-Forward” usually happens every four years after property tax re-assessments increase the taxable value of property. State law requires that property tax percentage (millage) must be “rolled-back,” or reduced, so that no more money is collected this year than last year. When that happens, elected officials are given the option to raise the tax percentage again by rolling it forward. “Rolling-foward” is a tax increase.

Don’t take our word for it

An interactive voting record is included below. To re-recreate the tax and roll-forward percentages listed above, simply adjust the settings to turn off everything but the categories you’d like to see. If you’re wondering how we arrived at the “votes like” percentage, simply turn that option “on” and hover your mouse over the name of any councilman in the table heading below. The “votes like” feature can also be used in combination with the voting categories.

Our tabulations include redflag votes

A redflag vote is when a single council member does not agree with the rest. They know the measure will overwhelmingly pass or fail, but they register a single dissenting vote anyway. It’s their way of flagging the vote for later scrutiny.
